|Distance:||1 and 4 mile loops|
|Notes:||Please join us as we honor beloved club member Dottie Rice, who was struck and killed by a car last October while she was cycling locally. |
Dottie was riding 'safely' - well onto a very wide shoulder and wearing her helmet - when she was hit by a driver who it is believed fell asleep at the wheel in the middle of the day.
Event begins at 6 pm at Recreation Park pagoda, Beethoven Street, Binghamton, NY, and includes two loops - a one mile loop on the perimeter roads around the park suitable for kids, and a 4 mile loop through downtown.
Bike club President Regina Losinger, a close friend and touring partner of Dottie's, will speak on the Ride of Silence and bicycling safety, and will share a few memories about Dottie, as will her niece Brienne Schmidt. Brienne will also speak of the death of her cousin, who was struck and killed by a drunk driver while cycling home from work not too long after Dottie was killed.
Members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community are invited to honor Dottie, who taught American Sign Language at two local SUNY colleges and coordinated interpreting services for the local BOCES. An interpreter for the deaf and hard-of-hearing will be signing during the event.
Dottie's widow Don Rice - a past president of the bike club who had just completed a X country bike tour with Dottie before she was killed, will read The Biker's Prayer, something that Dottie carried with her, just ahead of the Ride of Silence.
The evening will end with a candlelight service and a few words by family friend Pastor Debra Wilson.
Please join us as we honor our good friend Dottie Rice.
